CPC Certification

CPC certificationMAAP Healthcare offers online education for coding professionals to become
a Certified Professional Coder (CPC). Obtain your certification in less than six months.

Currently, more than 170,000 healthcare professionals are AAPC certified in
physician offices, clinics, outpatient medical facilities, and hospitals. These credentials
represent the gold standard in medical coding, and are nationally recognized by
employers, government organizations, medical societies and peers. There are many
benefits to becoming a certified professional coder.

Benefits include, but are not limited to:

  • Increase in pay over non-certified coders
  • Multiple job opportunities ranging from employment in physician offices to insurance companies
  • Opportunities to work remotely from home, or flexible schedule options
  • Relatively short training time in comparison to other professions within the same salary range.

Understanding the process of becoming a CPC

Planning:

Becoming a Certified Professional Coder takes dedication and hard work. The exam tests future coders on questions regarding CPT codes, Evaluation and Management, the body organ systems, application of coding guidelines, and much more. Not only must one pass the exam with a 70% or higher score one must know how to take the exam which means exam approach cannot be ignored. Not all CPC Prep Courses are created equal and many will only teach students verbatim course content from the textbook. Make sure you find a CPC Prep Course that offers learning modules on test strategy AND course content.

Job Growth:

Employment opportunities will increase at least 15% by 2024 for those in the health information field. This is twice the average growth rate for all other occupations in the United States according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As the population ages, the need for medical coders will increase due to claims documentation growth and the integration of electronic health records. A CPC can use their credentials as consultants, provider educators, and medical record auditors. As long as there is a need for healthcare there will be a need for billers, coders and auditors.

Always Learning:

Credentialed members of AAPC are required to acquire continuing education units (CEU) in order to maintain your certification. CEU’s cost money and can be obtained through attending webinars, seminars, and educational conferences but low cost or no cost CEU’s can be obtained through attending local chapter meetings, and completing quizzes posted by AAPC in their monthly newsletter.

Virtual Offices:

Opportunities are endless once you obtain your coding certification. Many coders are given the opportunity to work remotely once they have gained enough experience and confidence to meet the challenges and demands of working alone. This is not for everyone. While there are many advantages to working remotely there are challenges as well. Working remotely provides one the opportunity to set their own schedule and have a sense of freedom. It provides the stay at home parent the opportunity to pick up children from school, prepare meals, or even run some errands. Your day doesn’t have to be a typical 9 to 5 day as long as you still maintain some sort of routine while meeting productivity requirements.

Challenges:

Sometimes working remotely can cause loneliness as there is no interaction with peers which could affect productivity. It also doesn’t give one the ability to review or ask questions when encountering a challenging coding scenario. Communication is key to develop a network of coders that can be called upon for helping to review difficult coding scenarios as well as keeping one from feeling isolated. Typically, remote positions are not given to new coders as they need to be able to work directly with other coders until they gain the experience and confidence they need to code on their own. For those seeking immediate remote work this can be quite frustrating. Other challenges when working remotely is it takes discipline and the ability to set boundaries. The remote worker is often perceived as always being available to friends and/or family. There is no one there to supervise the remote worker to get the job done and one has to be able to prioritize and set aside time while in the home, away from family where they are able to work uninterrupted.

Be the change:

We are the people behind the scenes. The silent champions of patient care. We are responsible for coding procedures, diagnoses and reviewing patient documentation which is the first line of defense against fraud. We can help reduce the ever-increasing cost of healthcare by following the patient beyond the exam room by upholding our standard of ethics and integrity while keeping patient care at the forefront of our minds.

Physicians are responsible for the physical and mental health of a patient, but coders and auditors are tasked with the patient’s financial health and privileged information. We can be the change by helping to improve the future of healthcare.
